Myrtle Beach contemplating a new Municipal Improvement District for downtown that includes the Arts and Innovation District.

The extra taxes imposed by this possible new MID may be used for beautification of downtown among other things.

As reported by Ian Klein of My Horry News, business owners in downtown Myrtle Beach could be asked to pay the city more money.

The City’s council has approved the first reading to create the Municipal Improvement District (MID). The collected money could be used to “fund such things as street beautification, additional sanitation services, enhanced security, marketing, special events and research to support neighborhood economic development.”

Braley Dodson of the WMBF News also reported in February writing that “The district would be a continuation of efforts targeted at the downtown area, according to Amy Barrett, the president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance.”
